The story behind the music.

During his Leipzig years, Bach directed the Collegium Musicum and cultivated instrumental music for public concerts. The Air offers a moment of stillness between the festive movements of Orchestral Suite No. 3.

One detail that changes the way you hear it

Bach never used the title Air on a G String. It arose in the nineteenth century, when violinist August Wilhelmj adapted the melody so it could be played entirely on the G string.
