The story behind the music.

Bach was serving as Kapellmeister to Prince Leopold in Köthen when he completed his Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin. The manuscript is dated 1720, the same year his first wife, Maria Barbara, died unexpectedly while Bach was away traveling with the court.
