Eighteenth-century Vienna was fascinated by music “in the Turkish style”. Mozart turned that fashion into a brilliant, festive and cosmopolitan rondo, giving his Sonata No. 11 an unforgettable close.
Some Viennese pianos included mechanisms that imitated the cymbals, bass drum and bells of Janissary bands. That sound world lies behind the piece’s rhythmic play.
