MUSICAL CONTEXT

The story behind the music.

Now in Vienna, Beethoven was beginning to shine as a pianist and improviser in fashionable salons. One of his favorite pastimes was creating variations on popular melodies. These six on Nel cor più non mi sento by Paisiello reflect the freshness and virtuosity of his Viennese youth.

AT THE PIANO

Three ideas to work on.

Work first on the pulse, then the balance, and finally the complete direction of the phrase.

01

A steady pulse.

Practise slowly and keep a regular inner beat before increasing the tempo.

02

Balanced voices.

Bring out the principal line while keeping the accompaniment flexible and secondary.

03

A directed phrase.

Join motifs into long arcs and use dynamics to lead each arrival.

“Arranging does not mean removing emotion. It means clearing the path so the pianist can find it.”
