As Kapellmeister in Köthen, Bach worked at a court that strongly encouraged instrumental music. Free from the weekly demands of composing for church services, he was able to devote himself to concertos, sonatas, and suites. The works for solo cello were most likely composed within this remarkably productive court environment.
