The suite is generally associated with Bach’s years in Weimar, where he gained recognition as both a court musician and an organist. During this period, he immersed himself in the major European musical styles and composed numerous instrumental works. It was most likely intended for a keyboard instrument designed to emulate the delicate sound of the lute.
