Volume 2Intervals and continuity

A HABIT, NOT A TEST

Better reading is trained.

Short, carefully sequenced exercises for a few focused minutes each day, without memorising the page.

WHAT THIS VOLUME ADDS

More distance between notes. More control of time.

Dotted half notes, eighth-note rests and ties · intervals up to a fifth.

STAGE 1

Holding the pulse through a dotted half note.

The first stage introduces the dotted half note while keeping intervals within a third. The aim is to sustain longer durations and count accurately without introducing wide skips yet.

STAGE 2

Reading the rest within the pulse.

The second stage introduces an eighth note paired with an eighth-note rest. Intervals expand to a fourth, so you must recognise a wider distance without losing control of the subdivision.

STAGE 3

Sustaining duration through a tie.

The third stage introduces a tied half note and expands intervals to a fifth. The aim is to preserve the continuity of both note and pulse when the duration extends beyond its initial attack.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS VOLUME

Before you begin

Is this a method for learning piano from scratch?

No. It is intended for pianists who already know the basic location of notes and elementary note values and want to become more fluent readers.

What is the difference between a volume and a level?

The volume indicates the overall stage of the method and the musical vocabulary being introduced. Easy, Intermediate and Advanced are three degrees of difficulty within every chapter of the same volume.

How should I practise?

Open an unfamiliar page, observe the clef, position and pattern before playing, and reach the end without going back. Fluency grows through consistent practice.

Is this a repertoire book?

No. It is a workbook specifically designed for sight-reading practice. You can combine it with the pieces you normally study.

Do the paperback and Kindle editions contain the same exercises?

The method content is the same. Check Amazon for the format and availability that best suit the way you study.

Can I begin with Volume 2?

Yes, if you already read seconds and thirds with some continuity and keep the pulse through eighth notes and basic rests. The comparison section helps you check that starting point.

Why are fourths and fifths introduced gradually?

The second stage reaches a fourth and the third reaches a fifth. Distance increases alongside one specific rhythmic challenge so that everything does not change at once.
