MUSICAL CONTEXT

The story behind the music.

Bach was serving at the court of Weimar when he composed this cantata to celebrate the birthday of Duke Christian of Saxe-Weissenfels. Premiered in February 1713, the work uses a pastoral scene to praise the peace and prosperity associated with a wise ruler.
